Important Boating Information
Transport Canada Marine Safety’s Office of Boating Safety encourages boaters to explore Canada’s waterways responsibly. All recreational boaters are expected to know the rules that govern their safe enjoyment of Canada’s waters, including mandatory safety equipment, the safe operation of vessels and the protection of the environment.
To operate a motorized boat in Canada, you need proof of competency to show that you have basic boating safety knowledge. The most common form of proof of competency is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. You can get one by taking a boating safety course and/or passing a boating safety test from a Transport Canada accredited course provider. Find out more here.
In addition, all recreational boats with a motor of 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) or more must have a pleasure craft licence. Pleasure craft licences are free and are valid for 10 years. Information about licensing of recreational boats can be found here http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/debs-obs-paperwork-paperwork_boat_licence-3211.htm

The Heritage Boatyard Co-op is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Nova Scotia’s South Shore wooden boatbuilding history.
Funding is dependent on business, government, and individuals who share the same belief in keeping our history alive. We are a 100 percent volunteer organization.
Our stated objective is to establish and operate a small craft boat yard, model shop and education centre.
Enjoy our listing and we hope you leave with a better understanding and appreciation of Mahone Bay’s deep rooted history of Boat Builders.
The Heritage Boatyard Co-op is dedicated to preserving and promoting Nova Scotia’s South Shore wooden boatbuilding history.
The early days of shipbuilding in Mahone Bay date back to the mid-1700s as Mahone Bay was founded with a requirement to build 2 ships. From this point in time Mahone Bay developed into a thriving shipbuilding industry that reached its peak in the 1940s. For over 200 years boatbuilding was the core of our community. Boats were built in Mahone Bay to meet the demand of neighbouring communities involved in the fishing, transportation, trade and war efforts. Hundreds of commercial wooden vessels of various sizes and styles from dozens of boatyards comprised the industry.
In the early 1900’s there was a demand for recreational yachts and Mahone Bay was the first major builder of high end luxury yachts with Obed Ham Yachtworks. This industry thrived until the mid 1970’s when Paceship Yachts closed. Mahone Bay’s shipbuilding industry faded and unfortunately virtually nothing is left of the shipyards that were once such a vital and vibrant part of the Town of Mahone Bay.
In the early 1970's B&B's, artists and fine dining became our town's new industry. The harbour that once offered boatbuilders the shelter, rivers and channel now provide one of the most beautiful settings for tourism to flourish.
The Heritage Boatyard Co-op adds to the attractions of our new industry, tourism, by celebrating our founding industry, shipbuilding.
Big Pond Boat Shop is a custom builder of sailboats, dinghies and powercruisers (outboard, inboard and electric) in Martins River, Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. We build from wood epoxy composite and fibreglass composite, creating light, strong and easily driven vessels. Our shop does new construction and component manufacture, provides design consultation, design adaptation, mechanical and electrical installations and rigging. We supply Dix Design plywood boat kits and can assemble the kits to any stage of construction.
Big Pond Boat Shop can build custom boats up to 30'. Preferred method of construction is cold molded. For years cold-molded wood construction has been used successfully in building small sailing dinghies, competitive rowing shells, cruising sailboats, rugged multi-hulls, and swift powerboats. The technique involves laminating together layers of wood veneers or very thin planks to create a hull that is watertight, extremely strong, and lightweight. We can build strip plank as well as lapstrake plywood and plywood planked boats encapsulated in epoxy and cloth. We work with other Nova Scotia companies to source the best materials and equipment for our boats.
We build wooden spars, and other components including replacement rudders, centreboards and daggerboards.
We design and source bronze and stainless steel custom hardware.
Our custom process allows our shop to build many great designs. Call us for a design consultation.
